I just picked up this little guy yesterday. It seems to be in good shape with minor dents and no rust what so ever. It has a 4.0, 2WD (will convert to 4WD), and has a Dana 44 rear. The plan is to upgrade the look and lift it about 3.5" with 33" tires.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f108/irkermit/89%20Comanche/IMAG0121.jpg

Drove 310 miles round trip to pick it up, it was worth it.

Let the fun begin.

are you just going to do the body upgrade or are you going to try and do the full 2000 interior, exterior, drive line, etc like Dave and I did?

If you just do the body and you find a totaled 2000s XJ Dave is looking for a complete wiring harness so we can reconnect the abs sensors in the rear

NYY_XJ

Looks good D.

Yeah, what Will said.. If you have an computer wiring harness from a 2000 XJ I could use it!

Also, what kind of shape is the rear bumper in.. If you are planning on switching that out for something different and its in good shape, don't damage it further... people are always looking for those on comancheclub.com

if you are going to travel for it.. travel south.. get as far away from PA and their crappy winter road treatments as possible unless you want to start with a rusted out MJ

Pacifier
11-18-2011, 07:40 PM
I got the front almost all done, ordering new lights, front and rear bumpers next.

I'm thinking either silver and black, urban cammo, or military green. What do you think?

blthomas
11-18-2011, 08:42 PM
No camo. I'd do all black. Everything, rims, bumpers, do it all. A light tint on the windows.

Then I'd find some smoke lens and run colored bulbs.

A home built Black Ops rig.

One of the reasons I got the MJ so cheap is because the previous owner could not figure out why the engine was overheating. He replaced the radiator, water pump, and thermostat to no avail. After discussing this with the gift, he suggested swapping the cooling system from a close to an open style system. That took place today and now the engine is running at a cool temperature. :first: I drove the MJ for at least 20 miles (highway / town) and I did not have any issues. It seems like the problem has been resolved once again thanks to the gift.

the MJ is looking good... maybe it's just a bad camera angle but I think you need to make that silver stripe a little thicker, it almost looks like the black is bleeding thru it. maybe make the silver closer to the chrome around the windshield and above the doors to help blend that color with the rest of the jeep... just a thought

I've only heard of 2 such wrenching parties and both weekends were a bust for me.. i spent this past one driving 4 hours to Williamsport pa, spending 3 or 4 hours there and driving 4 hours home.. would have much rather been wrenching. oh and the MJ doesn't start still

It came out of a 96 XJ. In order to make it work with my 89, tons of electrical work will need to be done to include adding / matting computer modules and splicing into wiring harnesses. The MJ guys as well as some other mechanics that I have talked to don't recommend the swap since it's time consuming, it could get expensive, and the end result is not guaranteed.

so they made those cuts for you plus the price of the steel for under $100?? that's crazy prices! Springfield charged me over 300 for two 6 foot 2x3s (3/16 thick) and four 2x2s (3/16thick) and that was a few years ago!

Keep in mind that JK's and TJ's weight a lot more than XJ's and MJ's. The MJ is so light I can make it hop in dry pavement. :pound: SERIOUSLY!

A stock 4door JK Rubicon is 5700 lbs, you should be looking for at least 1/4" steel for rockers.

My MJ is around 3000 lbs and my XJ is about 3400 lbs modified.

ThinkMud
01-15-2012, 11:47 PM
yeah that's true, plus the times I bent my 3/16 was a bad spotter that put my jeep in a bind, so it probably would have bent anything. that's the the spot i bent one my rims as well, and ripped my Irok off the rim ,haha... it was not a good day. on Crawl Daddy at RC (a red). So maybe that size would hold up on normal stuff. I know the stock rubi rails are only 1/8"

When I built our 2x4 bumpers, I was into both bumpers, materials and their shop charge for under $150.

I know they are basic 2x4 3/16" wall, but they work.

They cut my tube, and then took the 1" stock I used for d-ring mounts, drilled the 3/4" diameter holes, cleaned up the edges, then cut to length all for $30.

Buying the d-ring mounts online was cheaper by the pair, but shipping kills a $20 part because they are so heavy.

This machine shop is way easier.

If you buy and pay for it Buck, I can accomdate a drop at your place.

As long as none of it is super long, my work van only has a 6' cargo area.

They are actually parallel with the frame, they look lower because they stick out about 1.5" further than the ones you would find from a retailer. :nerd:

Thanks!

Dave, what did you do for your lift? I need to start thinking about that next.

If I remember correctly he replaced the springs in the rear and did an over axle conversation and has 6.5" front springs with 2" spacers

NYY_XJ

Yeah, I got a new pair of rear leaf springs and flipped it to spring over (my original springs were shot) then the front has 6.5 coils and 2" spacers, but the was really just to level it out more otherwise the front was way lower than the rear.

i'm actually surprised you haven't either.. unless you are trying to leave the front end looking completely stock and hide the winch behind the bumper like the old factory setups were...

Oh and if you do make a bumper, make sure there are hi-lift jack points on it, something like this.

That's a great idea! I'll probably start designing something this weekend and buying the metal sometime next week.

as long as you have the D-ring mounts, you can just use a D-ring shackle with the hi-lift... no need for holes that will weaken your bumper. I've been using the shackles on bumpers for years.

NYY_XJ

we figured out the hard way that the hi-lift doesn't have anything to grab on my front bumper, so just keep it in mind while you're designing yours

damn that would have been nice to know at the bottom of GW haha... I wonder if his hi-lift is actually tall enough to grab the d-rings... might need to invest it a taller jack

They also make some accessories that could have helped.

http://www.hi-lift.com/accessories/index.html

I carry the Lift Mate (http://www.hi-lift.com/accessories/lift-mate.html)with me on the trails, it can be used on someone's tires, or wrapped around a bumper or something.

But those slots you made would make it not have to lift so high, so the slots are still a great idea.

nice idea.. i like the flip down instead of putting the plate randomly screwed into the bumper. Might want to throw a piece of rubber on those bolts, or across the top of the plate so if you (or someone else) forgets to flip down the plate before the tailgate you don't scratch up the tailgate

Dave... Come by the house sometime and I'll hook you up with the brackets.

The interior restoration has begun before dropping the tranny and converting it to 4WD.

At first glance I thought that I was going to have to weld new floor boards.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f108/irkermit/89%20Comanche/DSCN1022.jpg

As luck would have it... the rust was only superficial....

Fixed the problem with some rust inhibitor.

That blue one is nice! The seats are in excellent shape, no tears, worn springs, stains, so I'm going to run them as they are for the time being. The goal is to get the MJ lifted this week before getting into the transmission swap next week, then gears, and finally the custom front bumper. :cheer2:
