so on a Scrambler with a 258, how much dmg to the flywheel ring gear can be tolerated before is needs to be replaced? My shimless starter needs to be shimmed and its dinked a few teeth in the 3 spots the flywheel normally stops at. ring gear looks to be 3/4 to maybe an inch wide and its got just a little bit of damage maybe 1/16 of an inch in width on a few of the teeth in each of the 3 sections. Really dont want to replace the ring gear if I dont have to, I dont drive it enough.

I would personally replace it if I was planning on keeping the vehicle regardless if I drove it everyday or once a month. Why wait until more damage is done, in the long run it could be costly and perhaps leave you stranded somewhere.

Problem is its not a daily drive, it requires removing transmission and transfer case(6-8hours with help) or pay about 800-1000 have it done, and at that point might as well replace clutch ect which would be even more money for clutch parts. If its just worn down a little its no biggie, the gear is only to start it, everything esle is fine, pushing starting it if it comepletely goes still works to get it home ect, having a manual transmission rocks in that case. I have pushe started it 1 person, that sucks like big time though its a shit ton of weight.

So get the parts and have a wrenching party. A full day of wrenching with tons of help / drinks and food is always fun.

Sounds like an all-day wrenching party at Truck's shop. :grouphug:

If you decide to pull it apart, I say a lift with a good tranny jack like we used at shop night.

Jack and Jeff are probably the pro's next to Mike on CJ tranny stuff. I know both of them have had their's out lots of times.

I think the easiest thing is un hook the shifters from the top, then the driveshafts, then raise it up, then un bolt the trannny to motor bolts.

Leave the case and trans bolted together. Roll them back, do the flywheel and clutch, then re-assemble.

:boink: 2 hours tops.

got the bitch fixed, put in a shim, put water in the battery it was low, replaced the shitty ass cable goign to the starter with a brandy new one, charged the battery and cleaned out the metal flakes in the fly wheel ring gear. IT starts just like it used to nothing but cranking over and no fucked up exploding metal sounds. :whoo:
