Since I went with the 35" tires on the LJ, I have a distinct lack of brakes.

They were marginal with the 33's, but now when I have to stop quickly, (Frequently around here with all the dumbazzes who cut me off or stop short in front) the pedal goes down and the Jeep keeps going and going and going (Think energizer bunny LOL.)

Im going to buy this Vanco Big Brake kit: http://www.vancopbs.com/product_p/dkj1000.htm

From the site: This is a bolt in larger front disk kit for the following Jeep Models-1990-2006 Wrangler, all Comanches, all Cherokees 90-2000 and all Grand Chrerokees up through 98.

The kit includes modified knuckles, dual piston calipers, new pads and rotors. We've built this system to fit most 15 inch rims that have 4.5 inches or less of backspacing when run with an ideal tire size of 37s or smaller. In a lot of cases the unit bearing flange may have to be ground down slightly to fit inside the rotor hat, the rest of the kit is bolt on and requires no other modifications to the rig. It can be used with most after market steering kit that bolt brackets to the knuckle, call for details on any particular steering kit you plan on installing or have installed.

The kit was designed to do away with inherent weaknesses in these Jeep front brake systems while reinforcing the knuckle to be able to handle the pressure of a Hydroboost.. The cast iron sliders that hold the brake pads tend to flex under heavy braking loads. The ears on the pad backing plates rubbing against these cast iron sliders tend to cause divots. Those divots will catch the pad and only allow part of the pad to be used. If you've applied your brakes in a hard stop situation and felt the pedal going down and the vehicle wouldn't come to a faster stop like normal vehicles you've probably experience one or both of the problems mentioned above.

Due to one side flexing more then the other, or divots on either side there can be lesser braking on one side of the vehicle. One of the symptoms of this is the vehicle pulling to one side or the other when you stop. There's no guarantee that is why your Jeep is pulling but this kit has solved the problem on over 50% of the vehicles using it at this time.

We incorporate dual piston caliper to evenly distribute the clamping forces over the swept area of the pad. The current single piston calipers have a tendency to lock one end of the pad in the divot and then bow the pad inwards in a uneven manner. Rotor size has been maximized to allow fitment into most 15" rims. The caliper bracket mounting area on the steering knuckle has been strengthened and reinforced to endure the higher forces generated by the larger brakes.

Please call for details on any particular steering kit you plan on installing or have installed.

Woo Hoo!!!!! I have real brakes again! :biggrin1:

The Vanco kit stops the Jeep with authority, and will lock up the front with 35's. Brake pedal feels great.

Well, got the pix and some time for a more detailed writeup. The brakes went on at the same time as the regear and axle tube install. The VANCO brakes are amazing. I went from almost no brakes at all to being able to easily lock up 35's.

The best part though is the pedal feel. Not to touchy but a slight pressure starts hauling the heavy LJ (35's, bumpers, winch, lots of armor) down from speed quickly. You can also easily feel where the brakes are most effective and go there without just locking up the brakes. They alo seemed to get better as the pads wore in a little.

With the new brakes and the axle gearing - it feels like a Jeep sports car. http://www.novajeepers.net/coppermine/albums/userpics/10026/icon_biggrin.gif Worth the expense.

The kit I went with is a custom kit set up for me by Blaine at Savvy Offroad. It combines the larger calipers and pads from the 16" kit with 15" centric premium rotors. I had to go with 15's because I run 15x8 M/T Classic II's and 35x12.5x15 tires. The money was not in the budget for new 16" wheels and tires. The calipers are from a V8 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. They replace the poor single piston Jeep design with a larger, dual piston caliper. The kit I got is here - except modified with the larger calipers:

When you buy this kit from Savvy, there is no core charge for the knuckles or the need to return your old ones. New machined knuckles and brackets come with the kit.

Thanks, the LJ has come a long way since you saw it last. 35's, half doors, etc.

LOL. Yeah, for some reason Steve did not take a pic of the installed calipers. As thats the pic most people want to see, and its too stupidly hot to be yanking the tire/wheel off of the LJ - I grabbed a good pic of the same setup off of the web. The brakes were installed at the same time the regear and EVO axle tubes were done. All the work was done by Steve at Extreme Jeeps in Fredericksburg. Had to have a shop do it. The LJ was dangerous to drive.
