as of now i've got a 3" rough country kit with a 2.5" (maybe 3)" AAL, im tryin' to get rid of that AAL and keep about the same height, but i want to do so cheaply because as soon as these tires wear out i'm planning on going bigger, unless i still dont have another car at that time... i was just lookin' for some ideas, short of buying a new leaf pack from RE, cos those are too damn expensive, and id just assume keep that as a last resort.. thanks in advance.

Your cheapest solution would probably be to take out the AAL and put in a lift shackle. Rock Krawler and Rocky Road Outfitters both make a 2" Lift Shackle for the XJ, some others do too Im sure. I have had terrible experiences dealing with Rocky Road Outfitters though and wouldnt recommend them. Go with Rock Krawler.

Another cheap solution would be to use junkyard leaf packs mixed with your current pack to add lift - do a search of NAXJA.org for 'Bastard Pack' I had good results with this using S-10 Blazer leaves from King George Auto Parts at $35 each (Thanks Fryed!). People also have success using leaves from Dakotas, Mazda, MJ, Toyota Mini-truck, basically any 2.5" wide spring under axle leaves.

You can also save money by sourcing stuff from the hardware store instead of from the aftermarket. example - 9/16" Socket Head Cap Screws from the hardware store for your centering pins at $0.85 instead of the same thing from the speed shop at $5-10

Ditto, and I like RockKrawlers stuff (I run it). The shackles I run however are revolvers.

do the shackles yeild decent results? ive heard that they're prone to breaking, and the like.. however i would like to get revolving shackles, my buddy's got some on his ranger and his truck flexes like a mofo.

I'd stay away from revolving actually, heard bad things about them. I'm going with the 1" boomerang shackles and just going to mix and match my leaf pack until I get what I like. My S-10 pack right now is starting to relax a little and isn't nearly as stiff as when I put them on, will be a ton better if I ever put shocks back on the rear.

If you wanna pick up a pair of leaf packs from KG auto parts I'll give ya a hand putting them on. Got air tools, about a dozen jack stands, 9" c-clamps and other goodies. We could wipe them out without even having to remove the main leafs in less than an hour probably (3-4hrs with a case of beer).

Remember what I told you about making BPEs from the stock sway bar brackets and welding them up to that bracing? That should be all you need to do. I might even have some Doeutch Tech shocks that will fit ya soon.

I have the shocks, a set of ranchos and a set of trailmasters, and have a dozen or so of the sway bar links... just need to do the work and put them on!!! It's on my list along with the clutch.

head out rt3 east until you get to where it drops down to 35mph. There's about 2 miles or so of king george downtown. It's up in there.

As always...love the labor comutations in relation to a case of beer Brian...reminds me of jarhead beer math...36 Marines at 2 beers per Marine= 8 cases. :) You remember those days man. :)

Mine were stock heavy load leafs. 4 leafs including the overload. I got about 7" lift out of them using the whole pack.

yo i just called KG, and they said they had 95 s-10s, 4x4, for 75$ each, is that an okay price? will 95s work? thanks in advance

fryed_1

uhhh... they're usually $35/ea for the 2wd ones. Dunno if 4x4 are more expensive or not. 4x4 ones will probably give you more lift than you want though. 2wd ones you can get 6-7" out of, but they'll be really stiff unless you add some longer shackles.
