My employer is always hiring too...and it's in the 100 best companys to work for listing...but unless you live between FFX and DC your commute would probably be the same.

What are we all a bunch of wimpy commuters? Or are we men? we all knew how far of a drive we were going to take each day to afford a house and our money pit jeeps. Now toughen up and enjoy life!!!

Edit: I left one out from this period, I was on the small team that re-wrote the voting system for the US House of Representatives. This was done using windows ce on custom hardware with SQL server as the backend. As me sometime how many miles of hot pink cable are under that floor.

I will have to get through this cycle (tomorrow is FQT, Monday is D-day) and then I can have the moments to update my resume. Here is a short blurb version of it for anyone that has something closer to Ashburn... and I am not interested in working on software for intelligence or defense. I'm mainly looking to get away from Government contracting into something of being back on a team with less politics, less hardcore death-marching, somewhere where at least one or two people I see a day actually smile.

I am currently the lead computer scientist responsible for an application named PSIPS - the Publication Site for Issued and Published Sequences at the US Patent and Trademark Office, which centers around genetic biosequences and related chemical, mathematical, and source code files. The deployment is under Apache 2.0.55 on two Windows 2003 servers, two RH Enterprise Linux 4 servers, and two N-class HP/UX servers with Oracle 10g as the primary database and MySQL 5 used for non sequence-related data (transaction activity, for example). The public retrieval system which I gave the link to is the smallest part of the application, the majority of the work is in processing complex XML (primarily using SAX as the sequences frequently range into the multiple GB size, 40.5 GB being the largest I've processed, where opening them via DOM into memory is impossible) and genetic sequence files (CALS format) then compressing and indexing them for rapid retrieval (I chose to take the hit on time during the load to ensure the retrievals would be fast). This is the first system with the Department of Commerce (USPTO is on quarter of the DoC) deployed using PHP. I have written custom PHP language extensions in C++ for this application, so I am familiar with extending the language if the need comes up. I am responsible for all phases of the lifecycle for PSIPS to include production support.

Prior to this application I was the lead developer for a set of applications called WILS and WALS which are the Weekly Issue/Application Load Systems respectively. The development environment for this was Visual C++, MFC, Oracle, Stingray ,COM (for remote Excel reports generation) on Windows 2003 servers (load side) and HP Superdome HP/UX 11i servers with Oracle 10g. These systems load and store all of the patents and patent applications that the USPTO receives and/or grants. They are still in production. I spent 3 years on this system.

Prior to that I was a senior developer on the EAST (Examiners's Automated Search Tool) team. I came to be known as Mr. EAST (and they would never let me forget the pun). EAST is the primary patent search tool used by the corp of examiners at the USPTO and is still in production. On this team I also filled the role of ClearCASE administrator and InstallShield install package builder. EAST was written using Visual C++, MFC, Stingray, Oracle, Ipswitch Secure SDK, TX Text Control, ImageGear, Rogue Wave Library, and the BRS text search engine.

In all of these systems I have interfaced with technical personnel and management at all levels from the CIO, DBAs, UNIX Admins, Intel Admins, to supporting the and training the end users.

Frank...that all pretty much sounds like greek to me, but our company does that type of work. We primarily have gov't contracts though so you may not be interested. PM me if you want to check our openings...I can submit your resume if you're interested.
Good Luck.
