So this is still happening occasionally, but I think I am narrowing down the symptoms. Its very weird because its intermittent.

When the jeep starts and is relatively warm it idles around 900RPM and I dont believe I have ever seen smoke at that idle range. The Jeep feels a little choppy at this idle. sounds good, but has a litte bit bumpy idle.

After the engine is warmed up and you give a good run maybe up to 4,000 RPM the standing idle changes to 1000RPM that’s when I start seeing smoke. The idle really smooths out though. No bumpy idle, she really purrs, but is smoking out her ass.

The only thing I can think up is that maybe it is missing on one cylinder and 900RPM has been its idle because of that. When I punch it, that cylinder starts firing again and it has bad rings or something.

I still haven’t done the compression test, but I am still stumped as to the actual cause.

If it was a head gasket, valve or bad rings its shouldn’t be intermittent unless that cylinder isn’t getting spark. When I pull the plug on the right side, closest to the fire wall it usually has a covering of soot that the others don’t.

Any thoughts?

what color is the smoke?
Have you looked at vacuum leaks?
Are you running straight duals?

I think its kind of blueish, but its subjective.

Have not really looked for vacuum leaks. Most of the vacuum system is gone. The emissions system was removed.

Yes,Straight Duals.

If its blueish then your looking at oil.
The odd idle can be attributed to the fouling(even slight) of a plug.
Check your valve seals as there may be some seepage there.
Also a compression test will do wonders as well for trouble shooting.

In total Im thinking a case of blowby is your problem. Often times after a vehicle is warmed up and metals expand this will subside

I will add that RESTORE Engine Restorer did pretty well at elliminating smoke in our land cruiser. We had similar symptoms as yours. Ours is a well worn 94 Toy, trail only so for the moment a rebuild( rings are giving in to blowby) isnt 1000% neccessary

I will do the compression test and see (Blair?). The only thing is if it was blowby I dont think it would intermittent. I wonder if its something with the PCV.

I tried the Restore stuff before and it still did it, even more so.

ran fine for several months, but the issue has returned.

Its intermittent so i am starting to think maybe the PCV system?
