View Full Version : ZJ won't start

I just changed the water pump and thermostat in the 93 ZJ w/5.2L after pump went bad. While diagnosing the water pump my buddy drove it around the block. He didn't make it but around the corner and it died on him. We figured at that time that it auto shut off due to bad water pump. So after I've changed the pump and put everything back together it won't start (starter cranks but no fire). I've looked to make sure I didn't knock any wires or vacuum hoses loose and the fuel pump seems to be coming on in the tank. I swapped around the ECM, auto shut off and other relays that were the same type to check for bad relay to no avail. Also checked for codes with the ignition switch and it only threw 12 & 55 which should be normal (my understanding is that the codes between these 2 are the problem codes). Any other ideas?

Did you check to see if it had spark? the coils go bad quite often on those.

Distributer?
CPS?

I haven't checked any electrics or sensors yet. It got dark and I got tired and the distributer is a PIA to get to.
Of course I know how to check for spark but I'm not sure how to check the sensors.

Ok, been messing with this the whole day. After a bunch of testing, ultimately the coil wasn't getting spark, so I replaced the coil thinking that would be it...nothing. I'm also not getting a "check engine" light on initial crank and is now not throwing any codes not even the 55 end of cycle code. Can the sensors really cause that much havoc to the PCM or is the PCM just bad. I would get a PCM but they are not cheap and it has to be flashed to my VIN so no returning after if that wasn't it. Any body got any words-o-wisdom. Gotta get a ride to work tomorrow now :tinysmile_cry_t:.

Did you put the timing belt back on correctly?
Could timing be off?
crankshaft position sensor might have gone bad.

Never took the timing belt off. All I did before this was change the water pump and thermostat. I don't know about the CPS because it is a huge PITA to get to. I went ahead and ordered a new PCM. Will see if it fixes it.

if this is the grand there is no timing belt. Truck Check all fuses. Check battery terminals too. you have 2 cables coming off the pos side of the battery one for the starter and the other for the fuse box and the ecm. Make sure there is no corrosion.!
Deigo did Michelle get a boob job?

Yep checked all that. Things are pretty clean as far as the connections are concerned. the pwr distribution center is getting power. Thanks.

Argggghhhh....got it running last night. Seemed to be Crankshaft position sensor and coil. Ran rough at first but then smoothed out.
Went to try it today and it was running rough again and puttering like it was missing. started getting white smoke and looked at underneath, CAT & Muffler were starting to glow red hot. I pulled plugs and they are fouled pretty bad. Besides that what else could be wrong. :tinysmile_cry_t4: :tinysmile_cry_t4:

If the cat starts to glow doesn't that mean it's blocked somewhere? I always thought it was plugged up when it got red.

I think it should stall if its plugged. Unless its dual exhaust and just one side was bad.

Any signs of oil in your radiator fluid?
White smoke is usually indicative of coolant being burned during combustion.

While it's running, wiggle the connection at the PCM and see if that changes anything... ZJ's are becoming notorious for wiring problems as they get older... We had a lot of issues with that main connector at the PCM...
