Does anyone know if you have to remove the tranny in order to change the rear main seal of a 89 YJ 4.2L and automatic tranny?
I know th book says that you do for a 4.2L w/ AX-15.. and that isnt true.
Has anyone ever changed out the head gasket? I will be removing the wiring harness in the next week or so and figured that it would be the best time to do it (replacing the carb also), as it leaks like a submarine with a screen door. Any hints or tips?
(I will be putting up a post for a wrenching party soon...)
no its 2 parts

I just did this again last week. It took about an hour. I just removed the oil pan and starter. Buy a 1 pience oil pan seal not the multiple piece one
Hey Nick, do you have a part number on that oil pan gasket? is it rubber?

Got'm at Advanced Auto. The one piece oil pan gasket is like 30 bucks(trust me its worth it over the multiple piece cork gasket) and has metal inserts coated in rubber. The rear main seal is like 10 bucks and its actually called a crankshaft seal. No PN's sorry
man....................no #'s. fine!

I put up a Tool Party ad up, if you want to come over this weekend we should be able to knock them out.
Nick, why the one peice? I have used the 2 piece on a few jeeps and never had a problem. With the 1 piece you have to remove the tranny correct???
You can also go to some places and ask them for a gasket kit... it usually comes with everything. I have to see if they are any cheaper at advanced or on ebay???
hes talking about the oil pan gasket not the rear main seal.

You are correct i think. I went on all data and it day even the 4.0 in a 93 yj is a 2 peice and the same for a 97. I know i have had both off to inspect and the seals were one pieces for those years but i wonder where they switched it.
donno? all Ive ever seen is a 2 pice unless it was in the new 2.3 dual over head motor.

Back to this... when I had to replace the rear main seal in my old YJ it was leaking oil...has anyone leaked ATF??? Rebekah's Jeep goes through almost a quart a week of fluid and it is just sitting in a parking spot. About ever 3 days she drives it around the block.
