View Full Version : Dragling stuck in pitman arm?

Was going to put on a drop pitman arm. The steering box side comes right off.

The side with the draglink is hung up. All the banging in the world and she won't get off.

Used a pickle fork, sprayed it too.

Should I try heating the old pitman arm to see if it will expand some?

Thanks

Depending on how hard you hit it you may already be more than screwed... Looks like a new box might be in order

The pitman comes off the steering box good and easy.

The other end has the dragling stuck in it.

I can't get it too budge. :tinysmile_cry_t4:

Smack the end of the knuckle where the tierod end goes though, real hard with a nice heavy hammer. 2 or 4 good whacks should do.
Move everything to workbench
Then use a actual tie rod removal tool you can borrow them at your local advance/auto zone I think. looks like a punch that has a ramped fork on the end.

Since you have it apart. Check this http://www.jeepfan.com/reviews/review_retieflip.htm

If she still wont budge, and you have to break out the heat. It is better to heat the end of the pitman arm where the tie rod end goes in to expand that only. You do not want to put heat on the tie rod threads. Heat it and let it cool down on its own. The expansion and contraction should break the bond of rust holding the two together and the slow cooling will prevent hardening and embrittlement in the cast pitman arm.

Reading up on some older threads. Blair, in one of them you said you were looking for some allen bolts for your hub. You still need?

Yessir. DoinG some searching online I didn't see anywhere to get them without a whole set of hubs. I'm using some old ones I got from a parts axle that the heads are decimated.

I hear ya. The ones I have a nasty, but better than the last set for sure!!!

Well, some heat and Kroil and she came loose.

Did not realize that rod end is not serviceable, it's built into the end of the dragling.

Anyway the drop pitman is on.

Thanks all.
