Bob had mentioned getting a spring to mount at the bottom of the antenna where it mounts to the Jeep.

I don't have a spring either, he said it will snap eventually. I guess they can be bought where CB's are sold.

I need to find some myself.

Had mine more than a year before it broke on a low hanging branch. Then put a spring on it.

For all I put the Cow through I never broke the antenna. Even as often as I plowed through Bob's woods.

On the subject... what antenna do you use or like, why?
I'm lookikng at the Firestik, Firestik II and Firefly. I saw a license plate mount that looks interesting... http://www.cooltechllc.com/jeep/jk_ultramount.shtml

Tell me what you think please!

Believe both of ours are older firesticks, both hard mounted as I am lazy and haven't broken them yet.

I have both a Firestick and Firestick II and made a tire carry holder from scrap. They work well just need to tune them. I bang the 3 ft firestick II through the 6'10" garage at work in crystal city every morning and it works just fine.

you can make your own mount pretty easy, or swing by here one day and I can fab something for you to weld on... do you have a swing out tire carrier? if so, I have a good option to make a sturdy mount on them. I have one on mine i made and it is stronger than any mounts you can buy. I could stand on it if I wanted too.

I actually had the cool tech one on my last JK, but it got crushed at RC on a red trail:) I can't remember if I bent it back to work or just left it off... it was a good mount, just expensive, but I think mine came with everything, the antenna, mount, and even the CB cable that goes to the CB... it held up fine for a long time until i ripped my whole license tag bracket off:pound:

EDIT: Just noticed they are still selling the whole kit, and the price is actually a lot cheaper than when I bought mine. Not a bad deal. just make sure when you put the ground wire on, you scrape up the frame where it mounts until you see shiny metal, if not, it won't be grounded. or we can fab something for ya, either way.

Don't have the swing out tire carrier yet, saving up for that baby...wanting to get luggage rack and jack bracket all in one. I like the license plate bracket for now... it seems to be the safest place for it, maybe, till we start adding other things.
Kevin will be at shop night tomorrow, if you are there you may want to give him your input. He is an electrical engineer (or at least that's what the paper in the frame says ) so he'll understand all that. I'm not sure how he'll feel about welding things on to the body just yet, we'll see.

AGAIN, thanks!

you won't be disappointed with the license tag bracket one from Cool Tech. it's pretty stout and holds up fine for the most part. nothing would have held up to my situation when i ripped the tag bracket off, haha.

good luck what ever you decide! (and i wouldn't fab up an antenna mount that welds to the body! only to other stuff like bumpers and frame etc...)

Nobody cares if you can stand on it. Around here, Yeti-rated is all that matters. :caked:

So if I go with the license plate mount... is 3' or 4' antenna better. I assume I'm mounting low enough to go with 4' to not worry about clearance... is there really that much of a difference as far as signal distance?

One more Q, sorry: I cannot find definitive differences between FS, FS II and FF antennae. So... what's the difference?

4' will be a better. U always want the antenna to be above the roof line. Fire stick 2 has adjustable antenna that only needs to be hand screwed. Original fire stick u have to cut the coil to adjust and cant put more back if needed. FS2 I think is the best antenna.

You have to get a flexible fiberglass mine was on a truck for 6 years that hit everything on it way the antena sat at 13'6" so emagine the abuse haha
