blthomas
05-22-2010, 02:01 PM
Me and D acutally discussed this at one point, and putting the money back into our "Gulch fund" (not mine and his, but for the group) and maybe get something for the Gulch property.

Wether it be gravel for the entrance, picnic tables, signs for the trails, etc, whatever we could get a solid vote on.

Only thing I'd ask if we use my truck and trailer is minor donations towards offseting the fuel cost.

There is a new scrap place right on the edge of Culpeper by 29 that will take junk like that.

And I know by the power line trail there is some truck parts, a old oil tank, and some scrap metal roofing.

Prolly a couple hundy worth overall.

Anyway, I'm game if we plan in advance. T and I are busting our humps around the house alot, so we would need to plan ahead.

I have ALOT of staining to get done before it gets super humid.

Good score D. What kind of Toy axle is it? What year was the truck?

Buck, You have been nominated to be the closer of the cage build. We did not get to drop the gas tank today, you will be welding the last two bars near the gas tank to the frame once everything else has been done.

Everything will be cut out and dropped, so it should be easy once the tank is removed. Thanks in advance BRO!

Blair, It may be ready by Thursday night, so what do you say we go and get her then? It will not be running on its own power since all the wiring and the battery has been removed, so we need to winch it in order to get it on the trailer. This means that I will be wrenching on my junk in my garage this weekend in anyone wants to join me.....

All the wiring has been completely redone to the front of the vehicle, all unnecessary wires were cut and tossed. LED flashers and turning signals have been added, all that remains are my head lights.

Hood latch, battery mount, and tilting of the seats from 10 degree to 5 degree has also been completed.

That was the initial plan, but I wouldn't have been able to use suspension seats with that design, seats were too wide. The comfort of my butt was more important than the doors. :)

Good thinking D! The angled sides is brilliant, wouldn't have thought of that....

some tips...

slow your welds down. remember however fast you are going... slow down. it will keep it from spattering out like the bottom part where the bar is. Slow and steady man, you'll get it. Keep it slow to build up the heat to get good penetration and to keep your bead smooth.

I told you it was addicting, haha...

yeah not much you can do in tight spots... sometimes i'll crank the heat up more and leave the wire out longer, but it's not ideal, but sometimes it works.

makes sense... worse case if you don't like the way it looks once you've got the fuel cell in place you can always pull the walls and design something new... if you do decide to do that let me know i'd love to come over and help you design/fabricate something

Looks good, your weldings come along nice.. You have to clean the metal a little more though. It looks like there is a bit of soot rising up theflare, thats some sort of contamination.. It can affect the quality of the weld. Probably not an issue with the flares but with structural it will be

Pacifier
01-28-2011, 09:33 PM
Since the flares are only there to keep the mud /dirt out, I wasn't too concerned about the welds (contamination). The bumper however was a different story and so will the axle brackets, mounts, etc. Good eye, Keith.

Nice work dude!!! Now weld it!! Turn up the heat and do like 1" short beads. Let it cool here and there to not warp. One side then the other.

Prolly should preheat those tubes some too.

If I welded my axle perches, I think you can do that bro. Just more time and patience needed.

And double check anything I ever say with Buck!!! He is a really good welder and knows more.
