Hey all....I've got a 79 CJ-7 that is in need of some transfer case maintenance/upgrading. It is currently popping out of low range (at very inopportune moments)....almost made me slide off the side of the hill on the last run I went on (26 March). I know that the gears are probably worn, and that there might be something going on with the poppets in there. High range still works, but just wasn't enough for the conditions present last weekend. I'm planning on ordering a Tera Low kit (3.15:1) and a Twin Stick kit for it. Currently running a Ford 302, T-150 Tranny, 4.10 axle gears. 9" rear, D30 front, both with EZ-lockers. Anybody done this type of install before, or worked on this T-case? I know that there will need to be some grinding to fit the new low range set up. I'm hoping that tearing it apart and putting this new stuff in will clear up my problem, along with new seals, oil, repacked bearings, etc. Any thoughts, suggestions, or offers for assistance most welcome.

Thanks.

Ken (79-CJ)

Mike,

Help?

Not sure if you're saying: "My name's Mike & I'll help." or if you were looking for a guy named Mike that can help or knows about this type of install. Either way, thanks for expressing interest. I haven't ordered the stuff yet, but will be very soon & wanted to see if there were any folks out there with past experience on this. :?

Mike is our tech guy. I'm sure he'll eventually get to this post. Hold on.

The only person that I know that have done them are Ryan Conner (VTCivil on NJ), but I think he did a Dana 300 and Chris Nahas (Twiss on NJ), he has taken my NP205 apart which is alot like the 300 and the 20, and he has done more then a dozen 4 to 1 kits on the NP231.

You might want to talk to Randy Wood... he is big into the Ford stuff... more so then Jeeps. He could probably get you in touch with some people but most definetly get you a good deal.

Thanks for the info......I'm going to try and do this work myself, hopefully along with some technical assistance from folks that could help out. My Brother in Law (down in Texas) did his in his driveway, and said it's pretty involved, but not too bad.

I would make sure that you have everything you need and a clear and clean work area. If you have a digital camera I would take soe detail pics to reference back to. Good luck!

If I was gonna spend that kind of $$ I would go ahead and pick up a trashed D300 and get the 4:1 kit. And I would go with the LOMAX kit it is stronger.

Problem though my CJ5's wheelbase is too short for a D300 without lowering the skid plate a ton. As for LoMax....if they made a D20 kit I'll be all over it but the only people making gears is the TeraLow.

Open to other suggestions if you have some though.......minus stretching the rear, haha.

What about a T18/D20? I know that combo was around, there is a setup for sale on NoVA Jeepers IIRC.

Might have to swap inputs or something on the tranny, but I think it could be done and not be as long as a T18/D300.

That's what I have in my Jeep now (T18/D20) combo. I'm leaning more towards stretching the wheelbase now in order to run a D300 in addition to giving myself some more wheelbase to play with.

I'm saving my pennies for that combo myself.

Have a D300, had a T18with adaptor but sold it when I told myself I wanted a auto. But I changed my mind and now want to stay as a stick.

So trying to find a T18. Again. :tinysmile_fatgrin_t

There are almost 3 for sale locally on craigslist. Took a look.....look for T19 too as there is a guy selling a T19/D300 combo. If you buy the T19, I'll buy the D300 (We can split the cost)
