NEW CAMSHAFT SPROCKET PRELOAD BOLT

Information

A new camshaft sprocket preload bolt entered production of 1984, 4.2L 1-6 engines as a running change in late October, 1984. The new bolt contains a spring-loaded thrust pin in the bolt head to preload the camshaft.
On some I-6 engines not equipped with the preload bolt, normal camshaft end thrust may produce a light knocking sound generally occurring only when the engine is hot, running at idle speed, and under load (A/C on, automatic transmission in gear, etc.). If the sound is objectionable, it can be eliminated by installing a preload bolt as follows.
Preload Bolt Installation

1. Remove the timing case cover as outlined in the appropriate M.R. manual.

2. Remove the original camshaft sprocket bolt and washer. Retain the washer but discard the bolt.

3. Install the original washer and the replacement camshaft sprocket preload bolt, 324 3156. Tighten the bolt with 108 N-m (80 ft.lbs.) torque.
4. Lubricate the tension spring, 324 3157, the thrust pin, 324 3155, and the pin bore in the replacement preload bolt with AMC/Jeep Super Oil Conditioner, 899 3431, (Canada Part Number, 9097). Then install the spring and thrust pin in the bolt head.

5. Install the timing case cover as outlined in the appropriate M.R. Manual.
