Ok guys a scarey ride home from the party at Ryans--vibe in the rear-think my rear driveshaft it going out again. Clunking in the transmission when I shift gears--could this be caused by the driveshaft issue??
And thought my fuel problems were getting worse(pick up hoses on filter are detiorating so when it gets to half a tank it thinks im empty) only got to 3/4 tank then it started loosing power, stopped to top it off and made it home but still ran ragged.

Outside today checking things out and I find out I lost a bolt on one of my discos so I was half disconnected and there is oil all around the wheel well and my air filter is drenched and the air box has standing oil(thinking this might be the culprit of the loss in power ragged running last night).

So my question is what could be causing the blowback in oil and how do I remedy this.
And how the hell did I loose a bolt on my discos?

Oil could be many culprits. clogged PCV, blowby on the rings, clogged cat( yeah I know but its a cause.) check cat, check pcv valve and hoses to and from.
as for the disco, anything can happen, may not have been tightened completely.

Vibration (discos), PCV vac tubes on the valvecover going to the air box (standing oil) u-joints, play in slip shaft assy (vibes/tranny issues)

Thanks, looks like I need to find a new bolt, get a new rear driveshaft and check the pvc valve.

Which bolt did you lose? Sway bar end or axle end?

The PCV should rattle when you take it off. Another option is to replace the PCV with an Oil breather filter. The line from the air box just filters the air going in and out of the valve cover.

Mmmm like the oil breather there.
The Bolt is at the sway bar end.

Heres what goes on in the older 4.0s

Heres what a PCV restricter looks like ..... no valve in it at all that rattles.

vac lines assy that removes oil vapor from engine.

If you take the restricter out of the valvecover w/ out it it wont remove the oil/vapor and relive the pressure from the motor.

Good luck!:tinysmile_twink_t2:

I stand corrected. My 2.5 YJ didn't have alot of new fangled crap on the engine. Hell, it wasn't really even an engine I dont think.

Ok tried taking the pvc valves off and they both broke apart, one tube(closest to the firewall) completly clogged up. It looks to me that all the oil I see underneath came down from the airbox, had lot of oil sitting in airbox. Some oil was in the throttle body and hose leading to that. Could the old pvc and clogged up line be causing that?
What is a good cleaning agent to clean oil residue from air box?

I usually pull the air box and use dish soap, ya know Dawn takes grease out of your way...

I usually just pull the airbox out and hose it w/ brake clean. any of the pvc restricted hoses and fittings will cause the air box to capture oil and let it settle in the filter and the bottom of the air box. I like the Dawn dish detergent idea though!:tinysmile_twink_t2:

I've actually used the dishwasher to clean greasy/oil parts parts.

Valvecovers, oil pans... just don't let my wife know that...

Thank you to all the people adding advise to my thread please excuse the monkey who is trying to clutter it up.
Going to a junkyard hopefully on sat to get some replacement parts and put it back together.

My next question is if I blew a valve would I of heard something pinging or knocking in the engine?

Yes, if you popped a valve you would hear it chatter on the top end of your motor. A top end is a pretty easy rebuild, but it's probably more economic to just get a prebuilt head assembly and bolt it on and go.

Thanks Josh thats what I thought--didnt anything so heres hoping it was just a blowback issue.
Those tubes were cracked and dry rotted and the pvc valves snapped in pieces when we removed them.

cleaned the air box up and got all new hoses, gromets and valves and installed everything, changed the oil and replace the air filter but the engine still sounds a little rough/sluggish(granted i have only driven it around the block till i put the new driveshaft in). I do have some holes in the muffler-could that account for the sluggish rough sound? It hasnt affected it yet-only sounding loud.

Changed all my plugs-they were all gunked up from the blow by incident and its running a lot better now. Have a small loss in power due to the beat up muffler and think we need to do a SYE to get a better rear angle for the driveshaft.

94ZJ52
10-28-2008, 07:18 PM
Before the days of SYE's we used to rotate the axle to adjust for angle, all ya gotta do is loosen the U bolts and twist until you have a more direct line going to and from your TC. as for the TC angle you can always add some washers to the rear of your TC drop to make the TC agle downwards.

Keep in mind this is the redneck fix here, i don't endorse doing it this way, but if you cant afford the SYE right away, it is a route you could take.
