During the snow, my front axle wouldn't engage sometimes. If I reved the engine a bit, it would work ok, but not at idle. Is that typical of a vacuume leak.

Check the air lines running from the vacuum shifter to the t-case. Definately an air leak somewhere.

Bob...I've got a vacuum gauge if you need to borrow one. The leak is probably at a joint somewhere cause the lines (on mine at least) are hard plastic except where they connect to the vac motor on the axle and at the vac canister under the hood. I replaced alot of mine when I rebuilt the carb...they were dry rotted pretty bad.

If at all possible get rid of the vaccum stuff. Or if you have the patients of a Giant Tree Sloth - Go ahead and replace them. Sometimes $200 bucks out weighs beating the Jeep up with a 2x4!! haha

Replace the rt axle out with a one piece from a tj or xj. cost is $70.00 from local salvage yard and 2 seales and a cover plate for about $20.00. You will always be locked and never have to worrie about it again!!!
Check link to see what i am talking about.axle link (http://stu-offroad.com/axle/yjd30convert/yjconvert-1.htm)

I dont have much patients for vaccums or electrical stuff, and would love to pay $200 for a part - its better then a $grand$ for therapy!! Hahaha.

If I could get away with a good overlooker on emissions and inspections I would rip the entire vaccum system out of the YJ's.
