Oil pressure is near nilche, while the dipstick shows it's full of oil (acutally over filled at this point). It's starting to putter (though I'm not driving it after i heard that/saw the pressure problem). '89 XJ, 4.0, auto
any ideas? We're thinking oil pump, but i've got no clue

Well i would have a mchanical gauge installed to see what the presure is. If it is that low then its engine time. bearings , crank and cam. When the clearences get to be too much then the oil presure drops. it is more noticable when the engine is hot the oil thins out. When it is cold it could have good preasure due to the oil being thick.!!

not sure what's going to happen...any idea what would indicate oil sending unit vs. oil pump vs. rebuild the engine?
heck...if it costs as much as i would imagine it does to rebuild the engine, it might almost make sense to replace the dang thing (if i could afford to)

College...sending unit = pretty cheap...barely get hands dirty. Oil pump will set you for the pump, oild pan gasket kit and fresh oil...hands get a little dirty, but can do it from the bottom and it makes a good excuse to spend an extra 6 bucks and replace the rear main when you are in there. R & R the engine...could get very expensive depending on how radical you want to get. H2Mike can give you a better idea about that. Hope that helps.
